As Seen in About Town Mag: Elevated Basics

Each month, I enjoy putting together a style advice column for the fabulous local Birmingham publication, About Town Magazine. For the "Back to School" issue, I focused on key pieces to help women feel great about their outfits even when they're, inevitably, strapped for time. See my take on "Elevated Basics for Busy Mornings" in this month's issue of About Town or read on below!

Elevated Basics for Busy Mornings

Utility Tank

We’re all guilty of throwing on that standard v-neck too-thin cotton tank to combat the endless heat still lingering in September… right? Fight back with fun options. One of the easiest ways to elevate your basics is by paying attention to details, like the pocket and hardware seen on this fun tank (that comes in white and tan). This top will go with just about everything in your closet and will certainly beat that ratty tank you’re still holding onto.

Tie-Front Tee

This structured tee gets a facelift thanks to the tie-front detail and functioning buttons that run down the back. It’s easy to throw on over any pair of jeans or dress pants and would look excellent paired with metallic slides or sneakers to punch up your look even more.

Classic V-Neck Tee

A v-neck tee is a closet staple, that’s certainly no secret. But this deep olive-hued v-neck is definitely one you should own. The color is on-trend, as are the details like the patch pocket, split hem and raw edge of the sleeves. This will be the perfect wardrobe addition to pair with white jeans while the weather is toasty and with black wax-coated denim and Chelsea boots later on.

Luxurious Button-Down

Button-down blouses are one of my go-to items on super busy mornings when I haven’t planned an outfit the night before. The details on this button down – like a longer length in the back, patch pocket, perfectly placed buttons (you know how important this is) and its drapey, buttery-soft fabric – make this one a winner. You’ll find yourself wanting to live in this shirt. Pair it with skinny jeans and sandals for now or low-heeled booties once the weather cools off and you’ll look anything but ordinary.

Feminine Windbreaker

Adding a third piece to your look is an automatic outfit upgrade, no matter what you’re wearing. Throw this super cute windbreaker on over your favorite workout outfit for an easy but put-together look or use it as a topper over a casual jeans and tee outfit. You’ll find this third piece working hard in your wardrobe week-in and week-out.

Three Tips for Elevated Basics:

  1. Get friendly with the front tuck. Tucking your (elevated) basics into a nice pair of high-waisted jeans or pants immediately ups the cool factor of your outfit.
  2. Have a few simple statement pieces of jewelry that are fail-proof options for busy days. A v-neck tee outfit suddenly looks a lot more pulled together when you add a pendant necklace.
  3. Another easy way to look pulled-together on mornings when we you certainly don’t feel it is with your shoes. Think about the details the next time you’re making a shoe purchase. Mules or slides are great, but look even better with tassels or in a metallic fabric. Low-heeled booties get an instant upgrade when the leather is perforated. Sneakers are way more fun with a zipper detail or some distressing.
